About
Hi, I'm Rachel Jordan and this is my genius hour project. For this project, I am working with children ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. During the course of 12 weeks, I, alongside my mentor Barbara Basham, will be helping to teach these children more about music theory and how to become a successful musician. Because I am also a musician, pushing and motivating children to further their musical abilities is a priority of mine.
In my elementary school years, I attended this same program at my church every Tuesday from 3-5. In this program, we would learn songs to sing and play handchimes. This was the first exposure I had to music, and it is what made me want to become a pianist. Without this program, I may not play any of the instruments I play today, and I may not have received the same amazing opportunities.
During the next 12 weeks, I also want to learn how it is to work with children. I've always been interested in teaching, but I've never had that much experience in working with them (besides a few one-kid, one-night babysitting gigs). I want to learn what it's like to work with kids, and I hope by the end of this project, I'll know a little bit more about what I wanna do for the rest of my life.
My goal for this project is to send kids down the same path that I went down. Music is not for everybody, but without having the opportunity to give it a chance, they may never know.
