Yesterday was my first time actually working with the kids.
I got to my church at around 3:40, and after I arrived, we went to the music room and started teaching them the songs I had to learn a week before. The songs we are learning right now, Teach Me Lord and Bless the Lord are pretty simple, and they are catching on very well. Because they were catching on so well, we decided that the kids would be ready to sing in our Sunday church service in around two weeks' time. Exciting! My first time working with the kids went surprisingly well. I don't know exactly why I didn't expect it to, but it did. They listened very well and didn't cause any problems. I was a little worried, but they seemed to like me being there; I got a few hugs, too! I think this project is only going uphill, and I'm very excited to see what's to come.

For my genius hour project, I am working with children ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. I, alongside my mentor Barbara Basham, will be helping to teach these children more about music theory and how to become a successful musician.
From 3-5 every Tuesday after school, I will be helping these children learn new songs to sing, how to play handchimes, and a little music theory on the side. This week, I worked at figuring out the logistics of this problem (what ages I would work with at what times, what songs I would need to learn, how I would get there every Tuesday, etc). Next week is my first week, and I'm beyond excited. |
